Chastity Brown

Opening: Barbara Jean
Sponsored by Bryan Hoime and Greg Martin

Throw all genres and hyphenates together you want to describe her – gospel, roots & soul, jazz, blues & country – they are all right, and also not enough. Chastity Brown channels songs that are carried deep in the American psyche, the hunger, desperation and confidence that run through our times.  Coming from Tennessee to Minnesota, touring the country, touring Europe, she has had half her own lifetime and million lifetimes gone before to concoct her powerful sound.  Chastity was recently hailed by NPR as a "promising new voice" and her live act was chosen by CMT as one of the Top 10 Moments of the 2012 Americana Festival. Her song, "After You" was featured in the new BBC & HBO television movie "Mary & Martha," starring Hilary Swank.

Whitehorse
Opening: Sam Rocha
Sponsored by Bryan Hoime and Greg Martin

Whitehorse, a Canadian husband/wife folk rock duo, hails from Hamilton, Ontario. The couple maintained successful solo careers before and after their marriage in 2006. In 2011, the two decided to form Whitehorse and released their self-titled debut album in 2011. Since then Whitehorse has released The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss (2012), and The Road to Massey Hall (2013). Whitehorse’s live show is built on mesmerizing guitar work and smoldering vocal chemistry, but also brings much more to the stage with layers of percussion, keyboard and telephone receiver amplification, tangled like an embrace with the help of looping pedals.

The Pines
Sponsored by Steven B. Swanson, DDS

Duluth native Charlie Parr is splitting a show with Minneapolis-based band The Pines. Parr will take the stage at 6 pm, with The Pines performing at 7:15 pm. Both Parr and The Pines have played the Museum’s Concerts in the Garden in the past – Parr in 2011, and The Pines in 2012.

A great live act whether performing as a stripped-down trio (David Huckfelt, Benson Ramsey and Alex Ramsey) or as a full rock band, The Pines’ devoted cult following has led them to share the stage with such diverse acts as Bon Iver, Mavis Staples, The Arcade Fire, Iris DeMent, Mason Jennings, and Spider John Koerner.

According to Charlie Parr’s press release, “Parr shows up with a lived-in rasp of a voice, National resonator and 12-string acoustic guitars, a banjo and a batch of his own songs and well-traveled numbers by Mississippi John Hurt, Charley Patton and other cohorts from another time.”

Chic Gamine
Opening: The Mystical Overtones
Anonymous sponsor

In 2007, three Winnipeg-based friends and former band-mates recruited a Montreal drummer and percussionist, and a fourth singer, out of Winnipeg, for a fresh new project titled Chic Gamine.  The band’s musical relationship has been fruitful from the start; a demo flowed effortlessly from their first recording outing in 2007. Then came a score of performances across North America. Highlights include opening for Motown great, Smokey Robinson, and playing in a lineup featuring the legendary Mavis Staples - who ended up revealing to the awestruck band-mates that they reminded her of her family, the Staple Singers. In 2008 came their self-titled Canadian debut, which went on to win a Juno Award for Best Roots Album of 2009. Chic Gamine has since been a regular feature on critics’ best-of lists, and enticed the world to fall in love with their performances at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Also in 2010, they tucked their sophomore Canadian release under their belts, and were rewarded with a second Juno nomination for Roots Album of the Year.
