Collections
Love will decide what is kept, and science will decide how it is kept.
—David Hockney
The Museum shall collect in three areas:
• Contemporary regional, national, and international art starting with the early 1970s with the founding of the Museum and onwards.
• The visual history of the region. It shall assemble a survey collection of contemporary Native American art, starting with the early 1970s when the movement emerged.
• The Museum shall remain open to collections of historical art when offered, especially in areas which support the exhibition mandate, including twentieth century and American Indian art.
—Museum’s Mission Statement, 1987
