Polymer Clay Creations

ages 9 - 14

Three weeks to choose from!
Monday - Friday
July 13 - 15
July 27 - 29
August 3 - 6

In this class I will teach you how to make a variety of colors from the 3 primary colors along with black and white (seafoam green is a favorite), create texture using things from around your house and make some fun creations (gnome, monster, flower). Then you can use the skills you learn to make many other things! The focus on this class is to explore how to use polymer clay to help you make your own unique creations! Polymer clay is so fun to work with because it doesn't dry out. Your imagination is the limit to all the art you can create.

Materials list:

2 oz packages of Sculpey polymer clay (avoid Femo clay) in each of these colors: white, black, red hot or cadmium red (Premo Scupley), New blue or ultramarine (Premo Scupley), and yellow or cadmium yellow (Premo Sculpey). These 5 colors are needed to make all the other colors. You can purchase a value package instead of each package individually if you wish, but it is not necessary. Michaels in Grand Forks carries Sculpey polymer clay.

Kasandra Gregoire:
I grew up in Grand Forks and always loved art. In elementary school I would make my own paper dolls and had hundreds by the time I stopped making them. I also loved watching crafting shows and loved making flowers with polymer clay, eventually making clay frogs that portrayed people in popular culture. In high school I discovered a love of watercolor painting, particularly of flowers. I went to UND and received a degree in art with minors in art history and photography as well as a Masters in Elementary Education. Now I teach art through the Artist in the Classroom program in the Grand Forks Public Schools. I love learning about and playing around with new styles of art and combining different media to create something new, although my favorites are watercolors, polymer clay, fiber art, and printmaking (mostly on fiber). My other hobbies are gardening and going on nature adventures with my kids.

Weaving and Fiber Art

ages 10 - 16

Two weeks to choose from!
Monday - Thursday
July 27 - 30
August 8 - 7

In this class we will start by building up your basic weaving skills then teach you more complex patterns and techniques. We will be focusing on how to add more texture to weaving by learning how to weave waves, loops, soumak, knots, and additional patterns. You will learn how to combine feathers with macrame knots. Previous weaving skills are not required but we will cover a lot alternative and advanced methods.

Materials list:

Yarn. We will use less than a skein of yarn, but in order to create texture and to create visual interest, I suggest getting 3-4 colors and a couple different textures. I like using some bulky yarn, some thinner cotton yarn (Sugar and Cream brand), and then chenille. Create a color palate of 3-4 colors, but they can all have different textures. Warp string is used to string the loom (warp the loom).  You can use thinner yarn for this or buy specific warp string. A yarn needle isn’t required, but does help tuck in the yarn ends while you weave.  I have found them at Michaels. A loom.  You can purchase a small loom online, or you can make your own.  In the GF schools, we use small cardboard looms that come in bulk, but you could make your own from cardboard.  The cardboard should be thick, at least delivery pizza box thickness.  I can send a tutorial to make your own loom to anyone who wishes to do so.  If you wish to make your own, a good scissors would be beneficial. A little scissors, sharper is helpful when we trim the feathers. A stick or something to attach your weaving too, if you want to hang it. I just collect sticks from my yard, soak them in water, peel the bark, and it’s ready.
